I love spring. The best thing is after a long dreary winter, hearing the birds perk up outside and start singing . (Unless it’s the middle of the night or early in the morning. Then, I wish they’d just keep their cheerful banter to themselves.) Anyway, that always makes me a little happier. A couple of weeks back I was watering the ferns I keep out on the front porch when I noticed a bird fluttering away from the area. I had just poured some water into the hanging plant when the bird bolted. I knew immediately what that meant – eggs. After I got over the initial irritation that she’d laid her eggs in my new fern (have I mentioned that I’m quite likely to kill that plant without the bird’s assistance.) I was intrigued. I started watching her back and forth to the nest and started checking the eggs every few days. There were 5 eggs in there. I don’t know anything about birds, but that seems like a lot. Anyway, today, 2 of the eggs hatched. I’m fairly certain it was this morning, because when I checked one of them is actually still sitting in the bottom of the egg shell. I couldn’t wait to show the kids, who agreed that was pretty darned cool. My youngest was a bit disappointed he couldn’t pet them but he loves animals, and I know it will be fun for him to watch them grow. A bonus is that the nest is just outside his bedroom window so he can see the comings and goings of the parents now that the eggs have hatched. Maybe there’ll be more birdies in the next couple days.
